Helping Boys THRIVE Summit™

Monday, November 11, 2019, 9am - 3pm

St. John’s Jesuit High School and Academy

5901 Airport HWY, Toledo

In most of the world, girls and women are doing better than boys and men in both physical and mental health indicators…In most parts of the world, health outcomes among boys and men continue to be substantially worse than among girls and women. Yet this gender-based disparity in health has received little national, regional, or global acknowledgement or attention from health policy-makers or healthcare providers.

Our Toledo Event Changed Lives! Thank you to St. John's Jesuit and the Toledo Community!

The Helping Boys Thrive Summit™ is committed to working with parents, educators, church leaders, community leaders, and all called to the noble task of raising boys. Using brain-science research and best practices, the Summit offers practical insights and applications for helping boys thrive in the 21st century.

Children are our destiny, whether we ourselves give birth to them or not. If we are not working to improve the lives of children, we are living half a life. When we devote ourselves to children, we become whole.
Dr. Michael Gurian

  • 85% of stimulant medications (like Ritalin) prescribed to U.S. boys.
  • Over the last 20+ years, the reading skills of the average 17-year-old boy have declined.
  • Boys are farther behind girls in reading than girls are behind boys in science and math.

Shaping the Spirit of Boys

A look at the many challenges boys face in the 21st Century and how we can raise them to be honorable, purpose-filled men.

Workshops Include:

Helping Boys Thrive in Schools: Socially, Emotionally and Academically:

There is much research to support the claim that boys and girl learn differently. Practical applications of gender based learning strategies can produce results in the classroom and beyond. What kind of learning environment is best suited for boys?

Gabe Gonzalez, Gurian Trained Math and Science Teacher, St. John’s Jesuit Academy

Parenting and Technology: Navigating the Parenting World in the Digital Age

Parenting has changed dramatically as the world has been influenced by technology. Our children have been brought up in a world that is more online than live, dominated by social media and gaming. How do we parent, create boundaries, and set limits in a world that we struggle to understand and were never prepared for?

Workshop Leaders:
Derek Lee, MRC, CRC, LPCC-S, DBTC
Clinical Director, Perrysburg Counseling Services, LLC

Protecting our Boys from Sexual Vulnerabilities

One of the under-discussed challenges boys face centers around sexual vulnerability. Porn, sexting, online grooming and sexually aggressive peers can lead our boys into serious problems. This session will identify the various ways in which male vulnerabilities get exploited and provide practical strategies and important resources for protecting our boys.

Workshop Leader:
Alycia Wright, M.A., JD, Master’s Degree in International and Comparative Legal Studies from the University of London; Juris Doctor at University of Minnesota Law School with a focus in International Human Rights Law; Gurian Certified Trainer; specialist in working with at-risk boys.

Questions The Summit Can Answer

  • How can we set up the 0-5 year old boy’s brain to thrive?
  • What do boys need and how are boys needed in the world?
  • Why are boys falling so far behind in education and life?
  • What do boys need from mom, dad, and grandparents as they grow?
  • How do we create a compelling vision for boys?
  • How does the design of a boy’s brain impact the way we raise boys?
  • How can we create a boy-savvy environment in our schools and faith communities?
  • How can we best protect the emotional lives of our boys and young men?
Our boys face unprecedented challenges in the 21st century. Now's the time to roll up our sleeves and change the storyline of their lives, calling them into good, noble manhood.
